With summer around the corner, and flowers springing into life, my heart longs to get into the mountains. Usually this time of year I am yearning to get back to the small mountain village in California where I found the greatest revelation ever! I liken it to all those in the Old and New Testament who received revelation from God while on a mountain. Look them up, and see for yourself. Remember that expression, “mountain top experience?” That was literal for me.
In 1976 this New Yorker not only fell in love with the Sierra Mountains, but there she also found “the knowledge of the glory of God – in the face of Christ.” The god of this world had blinded my mind so that I might not see – and know – the glory of God. But, the joke was on him! I was actually in the most perfect set-up imaginable to ask for God to take me out of the darkness – and He did! (Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:4-6).
Please join me in another great story of God revealing Himself and a climbing one at that:
“Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge while she was taking a breather during this, her first climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens. “Great”, she thought. ‘Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry. She looked and looked, hoping to somehow find it. But it just wasn’t there. In her panic she began praying for calm; thinking of how the eyes of the Lord search to and fro throughout the whole earth. And, thus, asking Him to show her right where it is. After all, He knows every stone and leaf, and does know exactly where it is. She couldn’t find it, but she remained calm even though she could not clearly see across the range of mountains.
Later, while hiking down the trail to the bottom of the cliff they met another party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted, ‘Hey, you guys! Anybody loose a contact lens?’ Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across a twig on the face of the rock, carrying it!
Only God could make all these arrangements with the ant appearing at just the right time, picking the right branch, and going about the business of Kingdom work without even knowing it.
Tools of God
We see equally incredible things from the Lord in our sessions. Words of knowledge, words of wisdom, prophetic words, visions, and even animals and birds showing up at my window, in the trees, or in the yard. Sometimes they bring symbolism, or just comfort – at just the right time. One afternoon while a client was in her most vulnerable state, and I needed to be listening, suddenly a Blue Jay came strangely close to the window right behind my head, and incessantly squawking so loud that I had to send away any evil interference. When I did, that bird hopped backwards away from the window, flew away, and the calm returned. My intern, who was facing the window, told me later that after the Jay left two doves came and quietly nestled together at the window – looking in long enough to make a statement.
He Watches Over Us
The Holy Spirit, as the Counselor, shows up in every session in the most thrilling and amazing ways. I get to watch as He reveals to them that He knows when a rope will snap (in their own life) and knock out a “lens”; how He loves to come into full view right when we think we have lost it all, or we want to lose hope while in total discouragement. All it takes is believing, waiting, and watching for Him to show Himself as the One who hears our prayers and acts in supernatural ways to convince anyone one of us that He is truly alive and working on our behalf.
Oh, the grand stories I have of His revelations. I could write a book about all of them.
Our mountains were pushed up from the internal pressure of the earth. They erupted from the surface of the earth’s crust to proclaim the sheer Majesty and the glory of God in all His splendor. MLM wants others to come to a place of revelation of the power, the majesty, the glory, and the freedom that is found when our internal pressures are released. The beauty is “beneath the crust.”
We all have internal pressures and if they remain beneath the crust without any way of escape – that is where they will continue to boil. But, God is in the business of releasing us from internal pressures by breaking through the “crust” and revealing who we truly are. Free to live, free from pain, and free to experience the mountain peaks. God delights in letting us stand on a ledge and ask to see him… the “Light of the knowledge of the glory of God.”
“An island in the sea may be the top of a great mountain.”
This letter is, in fact, a brief summary of how I got the name Mountain Light Ministries.
